Could I have proof, ideally with a UK Gov link or a Citizens Advice link or someone who is in a position to know. Not guesswork please.

Apologies if that sounds snotty but I am already tearing my hair out having spent a day and a half trying to sort this out.

AA is supposed to be something nice the Government does for terminally ill folk.

Big thank you if anyone can help.

I agree, I think he'd be constantly pining for you, and that is so sad. :0(

You have me baffled, ladybirder. You could not have got the disabled person's exemption without the car's V5 showing it as being in the disabled class.
When you were told you were no longer entitled to it you would have had to send your V5 back to get it changed.

Can you hold my hand and tell me step by step what happened.
When did you buy your car? Did you buy it new? Did the V5 ever show it being in the disabled tax class?

How did you find out you would have to start paying the tax? Have you had to send your V5 back?
And what make/model is your car?
and i would add, the free tax you have been receiving, is that a case of not having to pay the tax, or a payment made to you to cover the tax?
Also, just to warn you, the "special rules" are usually used if someone has six months or less to live, and if you've been getting it for a couple of year, a review WILL happen at some point. Of course, the review may say that you are still entitled, but when i was a macmillan nrse, i did see cases of people having it withdrawn
sorry, i meant 12 months to live
Attendance Allowance isn't just payable to the terminally ill but they do priortise the claim if you are terminally ill and not expected to live more than 12 months.
My oldster has been claiming it for years.
yes, but what im saying is if the claim is made under the "special rules", a review will happen (from memory after about 3 years)

Barry I have found on the V5C, Tax Class: Disabled!!!!

So why doesn't the Gov's Taxing a vehicle site show that? I bought the car in 2018.

They want the "National Insurance (NI) number of disability exemption certificate holder e.g. AB123456X" I don't have it because I don't have a certificate.

Two whole days wasted on this now and no nearer to sorting it. Unless I just pay of course but it's the principle.

Cream crackered now and all I've done is sit crouched over a computer most of the day.

Oh and it's a Honda Jazz barry if that makes any difference. Thank you.
If all they are asking for is your NI number then you surely have that. They usually want the exemption certificate number which is an entirely different thing.
I still don't understand how you ever got disabled exemption without claiming the relevant benefits.

Did you buy the car from new?
Were you claiming a different benefit before you claimed AA?

When I do that I get:
Exempt certificate not found. I've done it a thousand times now. Well it feels like I have.
Question Author
No Barry.
Have you spoken to anyone at DVLA? I am at a total loss. If you were entitled to it the DVLA would be able to tie up your NI number with your exemption certificate.
I am still totally baffled as to how you got it. You say you bought the car in 2018. Were you paying road tax until two years ago?
I've just had a thought - it is your name on the DVLA, isn't it?
On the V5, I meant
Question Author
Yes I was paying when I first got it and Yes my name is on the V5. Barry I'll pay it at the end of the month. I hope I haven't had money I shouldn't have had but it looks like it.
It does look that way, ladybirder, no idea how you did it though. I've had to sort this out for a few people and I have always had to give the number on the Certificate of Entitlement.
I'm going to be mulling this over for weeks. Phone DVLA and see if you can get to the bottom of it.
It's odd that you're not in receipt of a qualifying benefit and you don't have an exemption certificate yet you don't pay the tax.
Question Author
It's very odd TCL.

I'm hoping that some info may come to light to explain it.
