You'd need an awful lot to make a base unless it's a tiny tree, mine has legs on it.
has it got a bit of "trunk" at the bottom? get a proper earthenware flowerpot, fill it with sand or tightly packed earth and stab in the spike. Even better would be plaster of paris or air dry clay both available online plug the pot hole, fill the pot with it, stab in the tree and support it so it stays straight if needed and let it set. I have got one I did 30 years ago and its still solid

The legs broke off it was flimsy first place. Just bought it last xmas

Thanks woof that is what I will have to do so of to the builders
When I opened one I'd bought for Dave some time ago one of the leg supports was missing. I ditched the other two and stuck the stem/trunk in a whiskey bottle. We had quite a few empty whiskey bottles. Still looking good this year.... :-)
