It's a Barclays. I'm sure either your Bank or a branch of Barclays will be able to help you identify the branch.
Please can you tell us why you want to know. There have been a lot of questions about sort codes recently, and a lot of the regular contributors have been wondering why.

Yes, nothing sinister or untoward - Thames Water is insisting they have issued me with a refund for my old property when I moved and have been quoting an account number with this sort code as proof. I didn't recognise it as mine but, as they appear unwilling to follow it up, I thought if I knew which bank it was I could at least confirm to them that it is a bank that I have never been a customer of - perhaps that might help mobilise them to sort it out! I live in hope! Thanks L

Hey Lara,

Searching google for '20-98-59 Barclays' does not yield any results which leads me to think it may not be a valid Sort Code at all. Trying the same search with various SC's I know to be valid (20-61-51, 20-05-00, 20-65-82...) invariably brings up a few results showing the branch address.

As spudqueen says, if you call any Barclays they should be able to confirm whether it exists or not.

It's entirely possible that Thames HAVE sent a refund but miskeyed the SC. Do you have a Barclays account anywhere with a similar SC?

Anyway, if Thames have sent a refund to what turns out to be an invalid SC the money will have either been returned to Thames as rejected or may have been directed to a 'reject' account at Barclays.

If you so establish that 209859 does not exist then it should be up to Thames to initiate a 'Credit Trace' on the payment they sent.

Then you cross your fingers that whoever works the trace at Thames and Barclays actually know what they are doing! These things can often end up in both sides saying 'It's their fault'!

Good luck! :)
