you should have a pensions booklet with all the small print in it which will explain all this

if i had a wife she would have received the full pension so long as we were together when i died

one of my old workmates died after he split from his wife/partner and i know that she never got a penny

best to get him to check with his pension department
Depends on the terms of the pension scheme. if I or my husband die the other will receive 50% of the pension. When my stepfather died my Mum did not get anything.

Thank you,so it would appear that ,if married, widow would receive...
50% with my pension, too
Question Author
OK..so it depends on the pension company...?
kloofnek you need to read all the booklet information , every last boring paragragh

best to know now as they do vary
Many occupational schemes provide for the widow(er) to receive one third or one half of the deceased's pension on an ongoing basis

But they do vary considerably - in some there may be no continuing pension. I haven't heard of any where the full pension continues to be paid though.

correct

This is not for myself...just a question which came up when conversing with a friend

But...thank you for your responses.
When my husband died three years ago, I got his pension, all £120 per month until this month. It has now been halved.

Chrissie,is this the usual practice..to drop it after so long...were you informed in advance
No, what happened to Chrissa is not the normal practice. But what matters is the scheme rules
kloofnek it varies with each pension company they all have their own rules. But it is normal that a widow does not get the full pension for the rest of her life.

I agree with all the above. My annual pension statement is very clear how much by OH would get if I pre-decease him.

Right..thank you all
Just to add that some pensions have a provision whereby, if you have taken a lump sum in return for a lower pension, the widow receives 50% of the (higher) pension that would have been paid had you not taken the lump sum. As others have said, the answer lies in the scheme rules/booklet.
They said I should have received a letter and they are sending me said letter now.
Not sure where the three year deadline/cut off comes from.
A lot of pensions have a Life Policy written in to them. These pay out if the recipient dies within a set timescale (my pension scheme is 5 years) but will be reduced by any pension already paid out.
It may be in Chrissa's situation that her husband's pension did not pay a spouses pension but she has been receiving the remainder of the insurance as a monthly pension payment.
