How do you feel about this, when you yourself are penalised for wishing to take your children on holiday during a school term, when that is the only time it becomes affordable?

Would discrimination come to mind?
They plan to make the missing days up. The education of the children won't suffer.
if the time is made up elsewhere in the year (as the headlines at the top of the article suggests) then what is the issue? you're surely not suggesting that parents should be forced to take their UK-acclimatized youngsters to the subcontinent at the hottest/most humid time of year?
I thought they got two weeks off anyway
Simple solution give them one week at christmas
They'd be back now
And the holiday will allow the children to view, and be viewed by, potential marriage partners.
Anything to aid integration ;o)
Not if they have spoons in their pants sandy
All seems very sensible to me - and the 'missing time' is actually made up at the start of the same term.

A more pertinent question would be "If 85% of parents requested a change in the school year, would the head of any school agree" - I'd like to think they would.
Is that really the school in the photograph? It seems a small building for 300+ pupils. Must be like the black hole of Calcutta in there.
The laws of this country do not apply to them as we see time and time again

That's a very misleading OP title. A more accurate title would be "School Changes Its Term Times".

Wow....is this the same Sunny-Dave who strongly disagreed with me for taking my children out of school during term time?

I couldn't get the school year changed to accommodate my needs.
But you didn't have 85% of the other parents agreeing with you and asking the same question?
If one parent takes their child out of school against the head's wishes - then the parent has the problem.

If 85% of parents take their children out of school against the head's wishes - then the head has the problem and needs to solve it.

A pragmatic solution in this case I think.
You're right....I didn't have that clout, did I.....be interesting to see where it ends when a school can be run by a majority of parents.
Isn't that exactly what that nice Mr Gove wants ??
No...why isn't it that 85% of the parents have the problem? A majority doesn't mean something is right. Let the school have a nice quiet week and the parents do catch up.
[ as long as the parents agree with him of course ]
Perhaps the head/teachers like the idea of a two week break too? :+)
