I was told yesterday by my building society that I cannot withdraw more then £500 in any one day from my account, even if I ordered a larger amount in advance. They said it was to stop 'money laundering' etc. and was the law with all B.S.'s and banks.Does anyone know if this is correct information, seems a bit high handed to me? TIA rosy

Same with ours rosy
Certainly not so with Lloyds or Nationwide. I can withdraw as much as I need from both, as long as it's in the account, obviously!

Cash withdrawal limits

You can withdraw up to £500 a day from a cash machine from your Ultimate Reward Current Account, Reward Current Account, Current Account and Student Current Account. The limit for all other bank accounts, including the Current Account with Control, is £300.

The daily maximum cash withdrawal over the branch counter is £2,500, unless you have pre-ordered a higher amount. If you wish to withdraw more than £2,500 in cash, you will need to give your branch advance notice. When making large withdrawals, you will need to prove your identity.
"nless you have pre-ordered a higher amount", and there is the difference. Yes your BS sounds over the top to me rosy but I guess they all make their own rules. Not the law it seems though. Was that a misunderstanding or did they deliberately lie to you ? Or maybe they employ ignorant staff who make up excuses as they go along ?

Thank you all for your replies. Yes Maizie it is a small local BS so that is probably the reason :0( Thank you for typing all that out kjn2, maybe I'll change to one of the three you and horselady mentioned. Could be your last statement OG, meaning they make it up as they go along because I find that whatever I ask anyone these days it turns out to be wrong -(but NOT including AB of course :0) no one gives a hoot I'm afraid -thanks again -rosy
rosy, which building society is it? I cannot believe any BS would prevent you from withdrawing your own money and gave adequate notice of your intention.

It was the Newcastle BS hc, two different girls told me the same thing, oh and the Britannia have it in their T & C but it didn't mention if you could order it in advance tho'. -rosy
Just looked at the T&C's. Seems the only way you can withdrawer larger amounts is by cheque.
Time to move your money, I think

Yes I'm sure I will hc,-rosy
>>>Thank you for typing all that out kjn2

I am sure they just copied and pasted it direct from the web site.

No typing involved.
I am with Nationwide and I needed £1500 in cash for a new central heating boiler. I went in advance to order the amount because I too am limited to £500 per transaction. As it was late in the day the cashier said hang on I will see if we can do it now. As they had the funds there they gave it to me there and then.

O.K. vhg, but they may not have and it is nice to be nice - rosy
(as the Halifax was to sycamore3 house):0)
Lloyds and Santander will certainly give you what you want, with notice. What if you wanted to withdraw the money and close the account?
