hi, i have receieved an unexpected payment into my bank account. The payment comes from the company my employer uses for it's payroll/HR but is prefixed on the bank statement "GBS Re xxxxx" where xxxxx is the name of the HR company.
Does anyone know what GBS might mean? A google tells me it MIGHT be government banking service which is to do with HMRC. There is a remote possibility that i am due a tax refund from 2012-2013 as i was on mat leave so had a small income for the last part of the year. But i just do PAYE, so rely on them to work it out for me, and wouldn't they have written to me if i was due a refund? Or just adjusted my tax code? And why a september refund (if that's what it is)

paye would more likely be refunded into you salary as way of a tax adjustment - also if they sent you money it would have been sent to you as a payable order not directly into your bank account.
If you were inadvertently paid money by a company that believed you were working for them, when you weren't, that money would have been net of tax. Perhaps their accounting system reverses the error by taking the gross 'earnings' back and then getting HMRC to refund the tax which was deducted?

maybe chris (i take it you saw my previous post about being paid whern i wasn't working for them) however, they haven't taken the money out
HMRC does not refund tax directly into bank accounts
Question Author
i know i will just ring the company on monday, but i'm really curious now!

P s FGT, the HMRC website says they do http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/understand-refund.htm
I have just completed my training in paye and was informed that the only way they do is via payable order or a readjustment of tax.
says here it could be from HMRC http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/gbs/

"HMRC gives you a tax code that tells your employer or pension provider how much tax to take off your wages or pension before you get paid. If you've paid too much tax this year HMRC may send you a new tax code and your employer or pension provider will pay you your refund with your wages or pension. If you've paid too much tax in earlier years HMRC works out how much they owe you and sends you a refund in the post or by bank transfer."
OK have you ever supplied your bank details to the tax office?
I've never done that, helen - it's all dealt with via my employer(s). Odd that you haven't been sent a notification though, bednobs.
Question Author
no, but the payment has come thru the HR/payroll dept of my employer. I think chrises answer is the most likely. Unless i get a letter tomorrow
"HMRC does not refund tax directly into bank accounts"

I'm due a sizable tax rebate from HMRC in respect of my late Mum. They state in the letter that the amount will paid directly into my account (which I nominated on the tax return form).

however, i was just thinking, on a Basic rate tax code, how much would you have to be paid a month to pay £450.56 in tax? it seems rather high for my wages. However, i don't have a recent payslip to hand to check
OK well as I said earlier this is what I was told in my training
Ah - so it's got your employer name on, I missed that bit. Still odd you weren't notified - but we haven't had our payslips this month either, for some reason this month they are being sent to home addresses. That should tell you?
Question Author
nah, i had my payslip this month already
If the £450 odd is for 1 month then you would have to earn £2252.8
Question Author
net or gross?
Question Author
i really appreciate your help by the way
