Bit of a boob on Countdown just now.

The conundrum was Brassica, with a reference to being hard up.
Nick then went to give the answer, Brassica saying that Brassic referred to being skint.
I have always knows it as Boracic, as in Boracic Lint.

according to chambers it's a plant of the turnip family!
It seems to be a bit of a grey area:

Could you explain that again, please?
It is boracic, but it's pronouned brassic.
i always thought it was brassic - meaning skint.

Boracic lint was pink, giving rise to another term for being skint, 'pink lint'.

Chuckles @ OG.
being brassic means skint. Brassica different thing altogether.
I must have led a very sheltered or un-skint life.

I have never heard of brassic for skint, or pink lint for skint. Is it Cocney rhyming slang?
you could say that, but i have always known it, i wouldn't consider myself a cockney but all the family were born in the capital.
for goodness sake, Brassic (Boracic) Lint = skint.
Are you getting exasperated with me, Zac's?
Question Author
I know what brassica is Em10.
And, yes Tilly, Rhyming Slang.
I just questioned Nick's use of brassic, rather than the correct term, boracic.
...."too much time on hands" springs to mind...
