There are similar "services" for Facebook and similar.

But why would any "normal" (i.e. not a celebrity) want to be followed by a whole load of people they don't know from Adam? From what I understand, most of these "people" aren't even real - they're just dummy accounts.

I don't want to be followed by dummy accounts, I want real people as most of my followers are. I don't use FB in the same way as twitter.

I don't know most of my followers on Twitter. Never heard of them from Adam but it's in doing that that you find some really interesting and funny people. Plus, without trying to sound big headed, I think I can sometimes be quite funny on twitter and I want like having like minded people I can share a joke with, whether I know who they are or not.
