Can a company accuse you of owing them money and sell this debt to a debt collection agency without proving this money is actually owed.

How do they operate?

If a compnay genuinely believes that you owe them money and they have had no joy from you, they can then issue court summons, and if you don't reply a county court judgement may be passed in your absence. If they don't want to go down that line, they can sell your debt to an agency, and the agency will collect.

A few years ago, British Gas told me I owed them money which I disagreed with - it eventually went to a collection company, and I explained to them that I didn't owe this money, gave them times, dates and copies of letters that I had sent, so they sent it back to British Gas.

When you ask how they operate, what do you mean?

Is this regarding a specific service/item?

If you give any further details, maybe able to help further.
The debt collection agency would need some sort of basis on which to proceed, a bill , an account statement, something.
