any way of finding out wether a property has a mortgage on it and amount still outstanding ?

You can certainly find out if it is mortgaged by getting a copy of the Registered Title from the Land Registry - you may be able to download it for �3 or so.

It will tell you the name of the mortgage company but not the amount outstanding
