My daughter just turned 16, and earns around 30 a week - now she's having income tax deducted? Surely this can't be right???

Are you sure its income tax and not national insurance?
Shouldn't be paying either unless she has had another job this tax year which means she's expected to earn above the threshold over teh full tax year. Is it just a small local newsagent that's taking the tax out- seems unusual!
If she has not signed a form to say it is her only or main job then she may be having tax deducted at basic rate. How much has been deducted? All she has to do is ask her employer for a form p46.
