In view of the recent problems at a high street bank , does anyone consider gold to be a good investment?

Bear in mind that you will have to pay for it to be stored and pay for it to be insured and that its value is likely to fluctuate in ways you won't understand. (Forget keeping it at home - that's a sure fire loser when you come to resell).
As an insurance against total loss of investment maybe it has its place but not as a mainstream investment.
