overpaid salary while on maternity leave

I have to resign as I cant return on my previous job as full time nights work and do not have any money and wont be working. i have heard once paid legally they cant askv for it back ??

Where does the money actually go?

If you have been overpaid your salary then your employer is entitled to recover it from you. I'm not sure what you mean by "paid legally". The recovery will have to be done reasonably and, depending on the circumstances and amount, they may decide it's not worth the effort of clawing it back.
