LAUTRO was not a limited company but rather one of four financial services SROs (Self-Regulatory Organization) set up in the 80s and answerable to the Securities and Investment Board (SIB) which acted on behalf of the Treasury.

In 1995 LAUTRO and another SRO, the Financial Intermediaries, Managers and Brokers Regulatory Association (FIMBRA) were merged into the Personal Investment Authority (PIA).

In an attempt to move away from self-regulation a statutory independent authority was initiated in 1997; the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

LAUTRO was also a limited company but ceased to exist as such in the last decade.
