Well, today I received two unexpected payments into my bank account, one for £230 and one for £3,300 both from tax credits. I've spent it on a nice holiday and a lovely new settee. I wish...

Actually I haven't spent it all, instead I have transferred it into my savings account to earn some interest until the tax credit people realise they have sent it in error and ask for it back!!!!!!!!! Which I'm presuming they will do, when they realise their error!

Just wondering what everyone else would do in the same situation?

i would call them and say "why have you put this money in my account"

I had large amounts paid in my account by them that I wasn't due.. so rang them. Turns out it was back pay from them not paying me enough.. I'd ring them personally straight away and see what the payments are for and get he details of who you speak to if they say it is meant for you just incase.
I would contact them straight away

I wont be spending the money, I have transferred it so that it I'm not tempted! I was planning on leaving it in my savings until they contact me but I think i will give them a call instead!
good plan, unless you are planning on just looking at the money in your account forever you'll have to contact them at sometime or other

The same thing has happened to me! I have transfered it to a savings account and wrote to them last week. Today I have received more forms to complete and looking inside it they still havent got my personal details right!
This happened to me about 6 years ago! The amount wasnt quite so large about a £1500 but I knew it was a mistake. I immediately phoned them, 3 times in fact and they refused to take the money back and said it would just be taken into account the following months etc. They eventually stopped all tax credits for nearly 3 years even when my OH had no work and we needed the money. I had to phone them tons and tons of times and last year we got it sorted. It took them 5 years to realise that the overpayment was written off and they owed me over a £1000 back!

Yes I just did my renewal over the telephone with them last week, I think that one of the payments may be true but the one over £3000 must be an error!

Just getting my own back Doc. You seem to think anyone else who's on benefits of any kind is a sponger, hence your post about how you'd apply for these credits as you get bugger all. Not nice when its the other way round is it?
Haha at you getting annoyed.....oh the irony!
