"Lady Eleanor Butler and her friend an companion Sarah Ponsonby", as described in the book Eccentrics by David Weeks and Jamie James. It proved very googlable from the words you provided and using the advanced search. Click pre-view and scroll down, they're on page 232. Don't know what you mean by "six letters" though, is it in a crossword or what? So... Butler?
Or is it "ladies" and you've already got "of the Vale"?

Hi Swedeheart
Many thanks. From Google I could pull up the book Eccentrics but not get into it. I managed to get the words I cut and pasted but that was all.
The clue is 'Who owned Flirt the dog and Mrs Tatters the cat?' The answer (3,6.2.10) is a place in Britain.
I have tried the link you gave me. It came up in German! and I certainly couldn't scroll down to page 232 so I'm not much further forward.
The Ladies of Llangollen would fit the number of letters given but only the Llangollen part is a place so I'm still not sure what the answer is supposed to be.
Again many thanks
regards Sue
Ha ha, it comes up in Swedish for me, bl00dy internet, it's very confusing innit. I'm not sure what you're saying Sue, i.e. why you don't wholeheartedly believe "The ladies of Llangollen" to be the correct solution. Are you saying you think all four words should be a place-name? But the clue starts with "who", so the answer would have to be a person wouldn't it, or in this case persons. Here, I took the snippet tool to page 233 for you.
...they were the ladies of the Vale on page 232, wish they'd make up their mind ;-)

Many thanks, I have now been able to read it for myself. However I have never come across the snippet tool!

I think I will settle for Ladies of Llangollen and hope that's the answer they want. (it sounds quite racy!)

Indeed B. Internet!! I am even having trouble with A/B now. They are sending me messages to my yahoo address saying I have answers but there is no link to get them !! I have had to return to where I asked my question originally. Fortunately not too many pages back in Arts and Lit but Quizzes and Puzzles has a lot more questions.
Regards Sue
They must be telling us to look for the answers within...

Good luck with the ladies! (So to speak!)
PS if you've got Vista (?) you've got a snipping tool
