what sort of event is it? Don't forget your aim shouldn't be "make friends" at this stage, more to "be friendly" - friends aren't made in one conversation.

Join clubs that interest you, voluntary work?
It depends on what you mean by "good".
Do you already have one that consists of a few people but you want 'better' ? If so, maybe you need to take stock of what you've already got and re-assess their positive attributes then ask yourself why you're dissatisfied with them.
If you *are* happy with the circle you already have but want to 'branch out' and find more friends, the best answer IMO is to make sure you are around when parties are being discussed then go to as many as you can !
If that's no good then maybe you just need to hang out with the 'sub circles' of individual friends from that group if they'll let you.
What is your age-group ?

What do you people think about starting conversations with people at places like exhibitions, shopping, parks ?

Without being freaky of course ! How would you react ?
well if you start chatting to people at exhibitions etc they won't become lifelong friends or increase your social life...... you don't "get" a social life - you grow one. Go to local pubs and get talking to people etc.
I often strike up conversations with people I don't know, though I don't make friends of them. I suppose if you visit a place frequently then you will start having regular conversations with the same people, there you can develop a friendship

But i meant to make initial contact at public places. How would you all feel about that ? if someone came up and started chatting to you...in a non-freaky way
I'm a great people person and can talk to anyone at bus stops and shopping, be yourself and rockyracoons idea is a good idea and a safe option x
I for one love it. I can talk to strangers as if I already know them if they'll let me, and it works both ways. I think I'm pretty good at fathoming people out on a first encounter and I can tell fairly soon if they are types I can get along with or not. We *should* be able to communicate like this, human beings are social animals.

The truth is, i'm not much a peoples person, but I would like to make new friends as my present few friends are all kind of moving on due to commitments etc..
...that said, I think you may be barking up the wrong tree if you think this is the way to start off a new social circle - 'freaky' or not.
...then again, no harm trying :-)
i would say increase friends and acquaintances the same gender as you, through voluntary and interest groups (eg. painting, walking, choir, local history) AND then consolodate these new interests and friends by having coffee, dinner or trips out!

everyone knows someone who will suit a singleton friend, and this is how new non-scary 'relationships' are made ...

Now thats interesting Cath'

Im kind of inexperienced in making friends
Def stick with this site and you will make new friends but it's not a meet site !

If you are looking for relationships there's a lot of sites plentyoffish n E harmony not sure what you are looking for but this site is great to chill x
I have no idea, I have never had more than one or two friends. I am socially awkward I think. I like my own company most of the time. I do sometimes wish I had people though. I think if you want to meet people then you have to throw yourself out there and into things.
Try chatting to people in, say, the pub.
Or even try working behind a bar for a while - even part time one or two evenings a week - you will make friends with the staff & usually with a few regulars too ...
If you are a nice person, and friendly, a social circle will usually find you.

Unless you live in a big city ... then it's harder.
... or are straight and live in Brighton ;)
