years ago my grandfather used to take snuff bought from the tobacconist`s i always thought it was made out of tobacco,but i have been told that its not ,i am still in the dark , does anyone know waht it was made of and can you still get it or has it died out

Snuff is basically powdered tobacco and it is still manufactured by a handful of companies (in the UK).

Old fashioned tabacconists should stock it - or at least point you in the right direction.

Snuff was favoured by miners during 19th & 20th centuries, as they could not smoke underground for fear of explosion. 18th Century dandies used it as an affectation, sneering at those "rude" smokers with their oh so common flames and fumes, "... belching like a manufacturing chimney, don't ya know!"
