How do these machines measure your heart rate? Is it by the heat from the hand?

Its supposedly from your pulse but they are notoriously unreliable.... a trainer at the gym once told me if it was correct I'd be dead as it said my pulse was nearly 200!

Yes, it is from your pulse.

And yes, as Lou says, they are not very reliable.

If you really want to know your heart rate, the best way is to stop and check your own pulse (15 seconds x 4)
