Can having your tongue pierced affect the way your taste buds work? I had mine done 5 days ago and yesterday I went to eat some of my favourite crisps (McCoys Thai Sweet Chicken) which normally I do not find spicy. But they seemed really spicy yesterday, and then for dinner I had pepper chicken which again is not particularly spicy, but my mouth felt like it was on fire! Could this be because of my piercing?

When I had mine done, yes it did effect the taste of things but only whilst it healed, I expect your tongue is still a little swollen.

I think your taste buds have had a bit of swelling to cope with, I think all will return to normal very soon. good luck :-)

So you put a hole in your tongue and wonder why if behaves differently?
Are you certain you haven't got a slight infection? I remember once getting one (an infection, not a piercing) after a small dental op and it made my mouth and tastebuds really sensitive for a few days.

Also, I've just had my first denture. It's certainly affecting the way some things taste.

its meant to behave differently, the tongue stud is to improve your fellatio
You mouth is full of bacteria. Quite why you would open your tongue so they have easier access baffles me.

thanks squarebear and docspock but I wasn't really asking for your permission/opinion.

saxy_jag, i suppose that does sound possible, I've been doing all the cleansing and more that was suggested but it could still have a slight infection - that might explain the sensitivity. thank you.

You asked "Could this be because of my piercing?"

What else would have changed to cause this?
Keep swilling your mouth out with salt water or a good mouthwash and keep your teeth really clean!!

ratter15, yes my tongue is still quite swollen so that probably is the reason if you experienced the same thing. thank you for your reassurance!

yep I am using original listerine (which was suggested in my aftercare leaflet) after everything I eat not to mention brushing my teeth, trying my best to avoid infection!
sounds really worthwhile
Did it hurt? Getting it done i mean.
I will be because your tongue is still swollen, as long as you keep on cleaning it, and it doesn't get infected, it'll be fine.

stoofur, no not at all, they numbed it beforehand. it didn't hurt afterwards either just got a bit swollen. good excuse to over indulge on ice lollies.
There is always a load of negative feeling and comments about piercing and tattooing, we are all different, these tattoos and piercings are a very personal things, many people have such adornments that others will never see, they are not there for others to see. we all have our own personal reasons for what we have done to our bodies. I love the the whole body art scene, its fascinating, but most people will never understand why we do it. that is usually because they don't want too and its so easy to criticise.
The tongue has a very rich blood supply and an infection would be exceedingly rare from piercing.

You have infact heightened appreciation from your taste buds due to the surgical intervention.

It will settle.
I'm thinking of having a Prince Albert and will let you know what Mrs McM thinks of the taste.
McMouse, I worked at Brighton General Hospital in the late 1980s and a biker came in (having had quite a serious accident) who had an Albert - bit unusual then, I guess - everyone wanted to go and look.
Prince alberts are ok but the bigger the bar the better and more comfortabel to wear, now go for an ampallang and I will be impressed, it hurts a tad! :-)
