If you mean Japanese superstitions, I read one in a book some 28 years ago. The book was about a little girl who developed cancer as a result of atomic radiation at Hiroshima. The superstition was that she believed that, if she could make 1000 paper cranes for the gods, she would be saved. (She died after making 997).
I think the number four is unlucky - as it sounds the same as the word for death - this is definitely the case in China/Hong Kong and - I believe - common across great swathes of SE Asia. Don't stick you chopsticks in in the rice bowl, lay them on top - unlucky, don't know why.
