Will a new battery solve the mystery ?

I left the lights on for about 3 hours on my 84, 150,000 mile Merc. The baattery failed. I applied jumper cables. As soon as the jumpers were connected the engine began to turn over slowly- before I could insert the ignition key . When I did try the ignition key there was absolutly now response. Why did the engine turn over before the ignition was turned on ? Will a new battery solve the mystery??
