It sounds like a switch going on and off. It doesnt really bother me - in fact its just stopped - but which does it signify?

do you mean which switch does it signify?
serious answer - that happened to me before. i solved that problem by pinching both nostrils together with my thumb and index finger, closing them, then swallowing. my problem was caused by air in the ear. hope your problem is easy to be rid of as my own was.

Thanks High.
As Society has indicated in might be a plug of mucus (snot) in the Eustachian Tube or middle ear and what he has suggested is correct.

However, if this doesn't work, see you GP.

It is "no big deal" lyn.
I`ve had a problem with my Eustachian Tube for months now and it`s driving me nuts, as I keep hearing myself breathing loudly in my head and my heart beats as if I have a doctors stethoscope in my ears. I have tried nasal sprays and doing what `society` suggests but nothing helps, so now I just bear it, although I find if I sleep on my left side, the following day it`s not so bad, and if I sleep on my right side I`m worse the next day. I hope yours get`s better soon.
