thanks thought as much just wondered if there were any old fashioned remedies
There are various recommended back exercises you can do to ease the problem. You can check out here:

http://www.spine-health.com/wellness/exercise/ overview-sciatica-exercises

or Google "Back exercises for sciatica"

Painkillers only relieve the pain, they don't do anything to cure the underlying problem which may have been cause by bad posture, heavy lifting, or a number of other things. If the slipped disc has been caused by your spine getting out of alignment, a chiropractor can often make adjustments to straighten your spine and take the pressure off the disc but it won't necessarily result in an overnight cure. Expect to pay about 35 per session, and a good practicioner will want to take xrays first so you will have to pay for the cost of them too, unless you can get this therapy on the NHS.
See a qualified chiropractor as soon as you can.
best of luck.

I would endorse what someone else has said here about acupuncture. I've had sciatica for over 20 years and when it's at its worst go to for acupuncture and osteopathy.
The bad news is it doesn't go away, just erupts from time to time, sometimes nagging on for months.
I find pain gels good at quieting it down. The other thing which helps a lot is a hot water bottle on the point of the pain when it strikes or starts to buzz, usually overnight. If the pain goes right down the leg putting a pillow under the knee in bed to raise up the leg helps too. Stretching out the nerve by putting the painful leg across the 'good' one at the knee when lying flat helps too. (Good leg raised at knee, ankle of the bad leg resting on knee of the good one.)

Of them all the hot water bottle gives me most relief and the chance of sleep.

Good luck with it anyway. It's misery really.
