Why do doctors give you crisps and cereals with hardly any milk once you've had your tonsils out?

Is it just a rumour?

somebody said that they found out that you heal better with crunchy stuff so they stopped giving people jelly and icecream and changed to crisps.

or is this just a lie to scare children?

I don't know when that the food apparantly got changed.

But if you refused to eat crisps ect they wouldn't be able to force you to would they?
Question Author
We need someone who has recetly had a tonsilectomy.
I am afraid its true
Hubby had his done years ago and wouldnt do it and ate soup and ice cream and soft stuff for two or three days when he first came home and got the most terrible throat infection that took ages to heal
Question Author
So do crunchy things help it to heal then?
It isnt that recent a development. Both one of my colleagues and a good mate of mine had theirs out within the last 8 years, and both were made to eat toast, crisps and cornflakes after their surgery. I recall that with at least my mate, they were given ice cream the evening of the op, and then the next morning was toast, and crisps later as a snack.

WHY? how can it help to heal the wound?
My son had his done in the late 70's and they said they heal better if they eat this sort of thing straight after the op. I had to sit and feed him corn flakes the morning after his op, he was only 4 when he had them taken out. But it seemed to do the trick and he recovered really quickly.
Question Author
Oh i thought it was a more recent idea.

WHY? does it help heal the wound quicker though.

I may have to have it done and want to see some hard evidence that it helps to heal the wound before i eat crisps cornflakes and toast after the op!
Apparently so, eating toast crisps and cereals cleans the wounds and helps with the healing process.

yeah but if they're crisps with flavour flecks won't the flecks get attatched to the wound and your tongue won't be able to reach.
I've no idea why. All I can say is that he was up and about and causing chaos around the ward later that day. I don't remember them giving him crisps but it's quite possible. They certainly didn't give him icecream and chocolate was a no no.
Eating normal food helps to harden the wound quicker than eating soft stuff like jelly and ice-cream.
Yeah but if someone's normal diet is full of mushy stuff then what?

Just tell them that you always eat mushy stuff if your that woried about it.

My dad eats; soggy veg, cereals that have been soaking in milk for an hour and mashed potato.

And hates anything crunchy so they wouldn't make him eat stuff he doesn't normally eat. Saying that though he has already had his tonsils out but i'm speaking hypothetically.

what is wrong!!
you go to hospital - you get c-diff or some flesh eating virus - that's an accident

if you have an op the docs and nurses will do their best to get you through it - if that involves standing on your head - that's what it takes - to be cynical about it - they want your bed ... and you out of it asap

if you are bothered about flavor flecks (?) take some plain in with you.

don't you think it's a bit unlikely they are doing it for a joke ...
how many u-tube films have you seen where the medical staff sit round flicking crisps at some poor schoolkid trying to force down a pringle?

how many sun articles have you seen about our brave boys being needlessly and callously fed toast after having their tonsils out?

the hard evidence is that somebody takes time to toast you a slice of bread because it just might stop you getting an infection and will help your healing

Maybe it is the salt in crisps that does the trick. If you have an abcess, rinsing with salt water helps to reduce the affected area....and aids healing. It may be the same principle in action after a tonsillectomy.
pasta...I have already given the explanation in the thread above this.
