Strange blood sugar problems!

Hey all,

Hope someone can help!

For s long time now i have had problems with my blood sugar levels. Where I used to work, the problem was in the afternoons, they would drop so low that my eyes roll, and my voice slurs. I went to the drs, and they said monitor what I eat for lunch, which I did, and settled on sandwiches.
If I eat jacket potatoes or pasta, 1 hour after lunch, I'm dont really know what I'm doing!

Recently, I have still been having a sandwich for lunch, but a couple of days have had a bottle of coke aswell, and within an hour, my eyes are rolling, I can hardly talk and really really struggle to stay upright in my seat!

I have had tests for diabetes, and would of thought that if my sugar levels dropped really low, a fizzy drink would help, but that seems to make me worse.

Has any one any ideas!? Have had this problem for a while now, and completely clueless, but would really like to be able to sort it out!

Thanks!

i had a friend who would eat a mars bar as soon as she felt it coming
From my first aid training a long time ago, I seem to remember that sugar (coke or Mars bar) were emergency rescues.

However for general control you should be eating complex foodstuffs, not sudden rushes of sugar.

I think you need to get your Doc to arrange more thorough training on how to conrol your condition.

Thank you both,

I was ok for a long time, with just having a sandwich at lunch, and drinking water all day, it has mostly been recently when I have had fizzy drinks at lunch that I have got really bad.

Where I used to work, my boss used to be able to tell when I was having a problem, and would take me off the phones and into the post room and give m some fruit till I was able to go bck to my desk.

Just seems weird that I have been ok, until I have a bottle of coke at lunch, and then my sugar levels drop soo low. Just seems the wrong way round to me!

Im generally a healthy eater, sandwiches and crisps for lunch, and then dinner in the evening. I dont snack, and I cant eat anything sweet, so yea, just confused lol!

I have polycystic ovaries and hand suffered for years with blood sugar problems - but it is only in the last few years that it was diagnosed.

Some foods cause your blood sugar to increase to a high level and then they crash and this is when I felt most ill. It made me feel anxious, confused, sweat running down my face etc. For me if happened about 2 hours after a meal, my doctor said that I as insulin resistant and gave me drugs to help stabilise my blood sugar (metformin).

I tried a low GI diet and it has improved dramatically.

I hope you get it sorted out.

How do you know that this has anything to do with blood sugar levels?

You said that you had tests for diabetes, but didn't say what tests or the results.

Are you on any medication?
What is your job?
The symptoms you describe need investigation.

There seems to be no scientific evidence to indicate that the problem is with your blood sugar.

999dot...I cannot understand your answer, as I can see no evidence that wiggal has diabetes.
In the meantime, wiggal, maybe you should try eating little and often. always have some fruit at hand-particularly bananas as they are excellent for releasing energy slowly. I have always been prone to bouts of low blood sugar-and that has helped a lot-along with staying away from very sugary drinks.
But do get your GP to investigate more thoroughly,as the problem needs resolving.
Squad - I am not sure if Wiggal is male or female. If female then there is a direct link between polycystic ovaries and blood sugar problems.

My body makes too much insulin but my insulin receptors are faulty. This causes my blood sugar to increase much too far and then drop again until I have lo blood sugar. I take Metformin to help regulate this.

I am not technically diabetic but I am insulin resistant.
wolf, thanks, I do appreciate your input, but we have not seen any tests fom wiggal that her blood sugar is anything but normal and always has been so.
Squad - true.

I hope that you get it sorted out Wiggal.
Hi Wiggal, all my adult life I have suffered with something similar to your symptoms - to me it seemed related to hunger but then over the years it was clearly not just hunger. Doctors tests for diabetes always showing negative and still do.
What I did was buy one of those really cheap blood sugar monitors, that comes with test papers etc and I monitored my own blood sugar swings. this at least enabled me to prove to the doc that my blood sugar occasionally dropped as low as 2 mmols.
However, the real breakthrough came with trying the Atkins diet to lose weight - this showed that for me, protein intake is the key. I have pinpointed that if I do not eat a portion of protein at breakfast and in the middle of the day, I will have one of these hypo-type episodes later in the day, no matter how little, how much, or what else I eat. Doc has offered no explanation for this, but it is quite definitely what works.
It's a good excuse to eat steak, barbecued chicken etc.
Plus high fibre diet, frequent exercise, and avoiding processed sugar.
How interesting, I have similar problems on and off and have been tested for diabetes so many times (especially as I have recurrent ulcers) but bloods always come back fine.

I find as natural a diet as possible is the best, when I was on Weightwatchers and eating a much more natural healthy diet, lots of fresh salad, fruit and veg etc... my energy levels were so much better and even.

I go through wierd phases from just wanting to eat eat eat and craving certain things, often salt, to hardly wanting to eat at all and often just having a sandwich for tea all day.

At the moment am in one of the food/energy craving cycles but despite the amount I'm eating and what I'm eating people are remarking I've lost weight and my clothes feel looser (go figure!).

Strangely enough I have PCOS as well.
