My Dell desktop (running XP home) works really well except for when it is coming on.

It comes to the windows is starting up page and then takes about 5 minutes for that to go.

Does anyone have any ideas of what might be causing this and how I could improve it?

Thanks.

You need to reduce the start up thing to make your computer boot up faster. To do that follow these steps:

1. Use the System Configuration Utility to safely turn off programs that start-up through the Windows Registry. Access this utility by going to the Start-->Run

Display of the Run window when starting MSconfig

2. Type msconfig and press Enter.

3. Under the Startup tab there is a list of all the programs that start in the Windows Registry. By unchecking many of the programs you can speed up the launch time of Windows.
In the last restart the system once.
Do not use the yogi service that johnpol is spamming the site with. It is expensive and useless. It is a rip off.
If you are not confident using the msconfig, you can download a free program which will help you to disable unwanted programs from starting up automatically. That is what usually causes a computer to take a long time to boot up.
To use the program, just tick the boxes next to the programs you want to disable, click 'apply' at the time and when you reboot you should see a difference.
If you are not sure what a program does, you can click the box and then click 'analyse'. It will tell you whether it is essential or not.
If you turn something off in error it is easy to tick the box to make it start again.

If you do, you'll get a service similar to that offered by Johnpol78 on here - i.e. broken English, mostly a failure to even understand your questions, coupled with advice that is 75% gibberish, 20% plain wrong, and (if you're lucky) 5% right.
disable the start up items from the msconfig except the anti virus.

delete the temp and prefetch files from the computer /

go to run type temp , prefetch and delete it.

run the disk defragment to defragment the hard disk .
go to programs>accessories>system tools >disk defragment.

if needed scan the computer with the installed anti virus software.
