Today I have been for a first contact lenses consultation at Specsavers. I can feel all the time that I've got them in, and since I've been wearing this first pair my eyes keep varying between being abit blurry (and therefore vision not 100%) and being OK. I only want to be able to wear them on very odd occasions, though will be building up wearing them over the next few days to (hopefully) get used to them.

For those of you who wear contact lenses, is how they feel at the moment normal for the first time? And how long did they take to get used to?

Are they daily lenses, weekly or monthly etc. ?
They can take a while to get used to and you can get things on them which can blur things especially if you are touching them or moving them or have a lot of stuff in your eye like sleep or general gunk you can't see.

Odd lenses can be duff too from dirt to splits to being too dry.

Different lenses suit different people and it can take a while to find ones which suit your eyes but some people just can't tolerate them.

I find keeping them moist is good and have contact lens Allergen eyedrops I put in each morning before my contacts which makes them sit better for longer.

They can get uncomfortable for all kinds of reasons, if your eyes are dry, tired, swollen, have an infection...

Prescription also often differs in contacts from glasses and can take a while to get right especially if you have problems like astigmatism. I've had problems with mine lately as they changed the prescription but it didn't work so are having to change it back.

I can't tolerate the 24 hour ones so changed from monthlies to dailies and having to try new ones as my eyes won't have them at the moment though have had problems with blocked glands and them being dry and swollen then infected. They also need to alter my prescription again to counteract astigmatism.

Did the opticians have a look after you had them in a while to check how they are fitting?

If it persists then pop back and ask them to check your eyes with the contacts in and your eyes in general to see if they can pinpoint the problems.

inside out also is uncomfortable! I suspect it's just because it's new and strange, but you shouldn't be suffering with them.

Thanks for your replies! Jenna - you always give long (in a good way!) and very helpful answers!

Because I only want to wear them occasionally, I have been given daily disposables to try.

I had them on for about an hour in town earlier before going back to Specsavers. He then checked my eyes and vision again whilst they were in. I did say that they were a bit blurry, but he didn't seem to comment on it really.

My eyes are +4.25 in my left eye, and +4.00 in my right. I also have slight astigmatism in just my left eye. I have been given contacts of +4.00 for both eyes, as the optician says this should be fine for the type of use I want them for. He did mention that normal contacts like these won't correct the astigmatism, and said that it wouldn't really be worth paying double the price for ones that did as it wouldn't make much difference.

Will see how these go, but I won't be surprised if I need to try different ones if I'm going to persevere.
You're welcome :) are you long sighted?

Mine's the other way round I think, -4.25 in both from what I remember.

I used to be on -4.25 in one and -4 or -4.50, can't remember which, in the other to try and correct the astigmatism but then they gave me the same in both but I can't see properly so they are changing it back.

They can take a while to get used to, have been wearing them about 16 years now but at first they were a beggar to get in and out and I got conjunctivitis a few times.

Never seemed to have a problem with monthlies though found when I tried the all the time ones, my eyes secrete a lot of stuff apparantly which those contacts don't suit.

Switched to dailies but having problems finding ones to suit though my eyes have been playing up with the blocked glands. Trying some different ones next week so hoping they will do the trick :)

They are worth persevering with as they make such a difference to glasses :)
that's about what my prescription was.. just get lasered, it's fab!!

Yes, I'm long sighted. I've worn glasses everyday since I was about 7 (I'm 23 now), and to be honest I am happy and comfortable wearing them. I felt naked walking around yesterday without any on!! There are just odd occasions though such as parties, weddings etc where I'd like the option if possible of being able to wear contacts instead.

I'll try them again today, and see how I get on!

sara3 - is laser treatment as miraculous as they make out on TV?!
it really was that magical for me.. but I'm sure it's not so straight forward for everyone. your prescription needs to be fairly stable (no major changes going on), I don't think everyone is suitable for treatment and it's a bit scary, but I think it was fantastic :o)

you really do have to weigh up all the options though. if you can get a free consultation why not look in to it?
