I say I went to the shop twice but I have been told it is incorrect as I is a pronoun.

I have been told I can say:-

I went to the shop 2 times which is correct but the girl went to the shop twice

From reading another post I know there are plenty of people who will know. Is there a rule?

My friend said it is I went 2 times but

IMO, if you say you went to a shop 2 times, then that is it, you didn;t go before and you'll not go again.
If you went to the shop twice, you could always go again and you may have been before.
But that's just how I see it.
so do you saiyI went one time instead of I went once? Interesting question
Twice is correct
even - so do you say etc etc etc sorry -typo
also - it's unlikely nowadays to say I went thrice - seems normal to say three, four, five times etc yet equally normal to say I went once, twice. No parity in the rule is there?

Dot you are too clever and I'm a bit thick!!

I should have clarified

I said to my friend I went to the shop twice this morning she said that was gramatically incorrect I should have said I went 2 times.

I'm going to explain it to her now thanks

Thanks everyone I've always said twice never 2 times unless in a mathematical way, but never sure way. I seem to remember being told twice at school.

Chambers Dictionary defines "twice" as follows, "adverb 1 two times Twice two is four. 2 on two occasions. 3 double in amount or quantity twice as much."

I would say twice as it can mean on two occasions.
Definately Twice!!
