My daughter (29) has just been quoted 1700 (private) to have a bridge fitted to permenantly replace 2 front teeth. I am astonished! apparently it could cost 5000 to have implants done instead of the bridge work. The dentist says he cant do this on NHS as its regarded as non esssential cosmetic dentistry

Is this typical? Is it worth getting a second opinion?

If it is non-essential she must have front teeth that are healthy. Replacing missing or unhealthy front teeth is not 'unnecessary cosmetic' work for the purpose of the NHS.

I am not shocked by that quote, but she could probably get it cheaper elsewhere. Implants can easily cost 2500 per tooth - my friend went to South Africa to get hers done much cheaper.
That sounds about right. I paid about 3000 a couple of years ago to have 3 bottom teeth bridged. :-(
No wonder people can't afford to get their teeth looked after properly!
Not sure where you live but when one of my friends lived in London she registered with the Dental Hospital and got most of her work done free I think. Was a few years ago.Not sure if they still do this though or if they do whether they will take anyone.

Although the dentists are fully qualified they are I think within the last year and she never had any trouble.

If you go to a dental training hospital you can get the work done for a fraction of the cost. You will be assessed by a qualified dentist. The student (most probably 4th yr) will be supervised by a qualified dentist.
