why do humans (especially men) often have very hairy behinds, when you would have thought that have a smooth bum would increase hygiene.

It doesnt seem to be an issue if you keep it clean....think of furry animals. The advantages of fur seem to outweigh the preening burden it imposes. Fur in humans is largely vestigial when not used for secondary sexual purposes, so I think evolution finds it not worth bothering with....
