Bitten my nails ever since I got my first teeth now in my fifties and am using Sally Hansen Hard as wraps and they are looking goood. Emery board must be handy (!) at all times to stop nibbling of any rough edges but managed to tear one really badly into nail bed and kept it going and growing for weeks by putting a drop of super glue on break, Also hand cream every time you wash your hands and rubber gloves when washing up. I loved being able to drum fingernails on table for first time instead of thudding my poor chewed finger ends!!
ooh are you female Dylan or male ? cos the sally Hansen stuff is shiny but they do make some matt stuff as well. It all seems brill.

thanks will do
I am lucky I admit, I have really tough nails and they grow strong and quickly but I NEVER file them down unless I have cut them, I think you should file now and then if ragged but its not good for the nails.

You should nourish them with almond oil (I keep meaning to get some) and massage it into each nail before bed maybe, the massaging action will also help (bloodflow) and DONT BITE you risk infection in the hangnails.
Good luck
I got a book for christmas called 'The Girls' Book of Glamour A Guide To Being A Goddess' and in it there's all sorts of things like 'How To Make A Good First Impression' and 'How To Get The Shiniest Hair Ever' and "How To Grow Your Nails Successfully'. It says to restrict yourself to biting the nails on just one hand and then on only one nail. You'll soon be inspired to grow out the bitten. You could regularly apply scented hand-lotion or anti-nail-biting cream or varnish. The unpleasant flavour will soon put you off biting you nails.
You could also try fake nails (if like Naomicorlett mentioned, you are female), and it'll give your nails a chance to grow underneath.

HEALTHY NAILS (Which was more oor less the answer to your question)
It says once you've broken the habit these tips help you to make sure your nails are as strong as possible.
-Eat 2 portions of protein a day meat, fish, dairy, soya and lentils will help your nails grow strong and healthy.
-When you wash the dishes make sure you wear washing up gloves as soaking you hands in water weakens the nail.
-When the start growing, file them with an emery board to prevent them from breaking.
Then it tells you how to file your nails.
-Make sure your nails are dry, then gently smooth away any rough edges and file them into a nice even shape.
-Never file down the sides of your nail - it can lead to infection and seriously weaken your nails.
-Always file at a 45˚ angle, at one direction only and under the nail.
-Never file backwards and forwards as it causes the nail layers to split.

DID YOU KNOW?
-Nails grow about 3mm a month.
-They grow faster in summer than winter.
-A child's nails grow faster than an adults.

Well I bloody well hope I haven't bored you reading this and that my book works. If you wanted to buy it yourself I already told you the title and the author is
Speaking as an ex-nailbiter, I offer these tips -
Most important, keep the cuticle pushed well back, This stops the red shiny skin at the nail base with those tempting little bits of skin sticking up, and instantly makes the nails look a bit longer.
It's all too easy to find your fingers in your mouth & you haven't even realised you're nibbling, so
Put on some nail varnish, possibly clear, so you bite that instead.
Dip your fingers in neat Dettol, the taste should make you take your fingers out of your mouth.
I have even heard of people walking round (at home) with a baby's dummy in their mouth, so they can't nibble!
Best of luck.
I stopped biting years ago by just biting the little fingernail after a while you don't even want to bite that, believe me it works.
Take kelp (seaweed) tablets from Boots. File nails with a steel file only.
My mum had really weak nails, she always had the acrilic ones put on. She cant afford them any more, and her nails were freakishly weak! Soooo, she filed them regularly, then ever morning and night, and sometimes through out the day she did the cutical cream, (almond oil is also good) and put on the strenthener polish on them. Her nails are nicer than mine now......(Grrrrrr!!!!) Took a while, but, wow they look fab! Also drinking lots of milk and water, helps! I think.......!

lizwizz - that book sounds fab!!!! :)
