I have noticed that it tends to be women rather than men who go on church Alpha courses, or visit shops that sell dreamcatchers or angel charms and all that stuff, or visit tarot card readers, or read astrology horoscopes. Women seem to be looking for something out there. Less so with men. Why is this?

It does appear that women are more drawn to these things, but I don't know why. Do women truly have a greater inner sense of spirituality than men - or do men just think about spirituality less deeply? Perhaps men simply have more sense than to believe in horoscopes, tarot cards, and the like - or it could just be that women are more adept at multi-tasking. :o)

Naomi - maybe women are specially gifted and closer to whatever powers of the heavens as may exist?

Wiz - tut tut, old chap, shame on you!
There are more Widows than Widowers. They're just seeking comfort.
I think it is something to do with the way God created women. Take an example from motherhood. Things a mother can do for a child are most of the time beyond father. There is no equivalent to bearing a child in your womb for nine months. In my religion it is believed that mother is where childs life start and that impact or influence and training can be a huge difference in the upbringing and whole life of the child.

For that reason God has given more softer heart and feelings to women. And that is what I believe takes you near God more. Now few people will call it spiritualism, lack of sense (per Naomi) or anything else.
Keyplus, Oh dear. How is that 'per Naomi'? I mentioned belief in tarot cards and horoscopes in connection with a lack of sense - but nothing else. You really ought to read my posts more thoroughly, you know, otherwise people here could be forgiven for thinking you have an agenda.

Wiz, You're quite safe because, sad to say, I have to agree. Many women do seem to be gullible - as does the odd man. ;o)

Jock, Women, in general, are possibly more in touch with their spirituality. It's unfortunate, but many are, as Wiz says, gullible, and rather than explore it with an open mind, and look at the bigger picture, align it to religious doctrine, or go down the route of tarot cards, fortune tellers, and horoscopes, etc - or a confusing concoction of religion with several of the other things thrown in.
Women and men are wired differently.

Look at any group of toddlers - Girls will interact more with each other and boys will play with "things".

No it's not universally true but it's a clear and obvious trend.

As they grow up this trend tends to continue and you find more men on course like engineering and science that tend to deal with things and more women on social sciences and psycology and the like that tend to deal with people.

Is it therefore any wonder that women see the world in human terms and are more drawn to ideas where there is human-like conciousness behind all the things that happen and that men tend to view the world in a more mechanistic manner?

Our tendency to be religious does seem to have a strong inherited bias too studies of separated twins show this.

Keyplus, I'm aware of what I've written. Two separate sentences - one dealing with inner spirituality - the other dealing with horoscopes and tarot cards, etc, none of which I, or in my opinion, anyone with any sense, would consider to have any connection to spirituality.

Jake, yes, men and women are wired differently. I've always believed so - and vive le difference!

You say 'Our tendency to be religious.....', but personally I don't believe that spirituality and religion are necessarily connected. Some people may think they are, but there are many who experience a deep sense of spirituality without allowing religion to enter their lives.

Hiya Luna, you're a spiritual man who doesn't feel the need for religion. How would you rationalise that?

Luna, thanks for that. If there is a creative force (as you put it), I'm not sure we are separate from it. We are all part of this huge thing called nature - even though we're pretty insignificant and can only take a minor role.

In general women have to cope with men in their lives so they are by circumstance more desperate for answers and meaning
