Weeping kittens eyes after opening

I find that when my new kittens open their eyes, they sometimes have terrible pus behind the infected lids. I bathe them in boiled water with a little salt then put in cream from the vets, any ideas anyone as its pretty unpleasant. Cats are vaccinated British Shorthair.
