Suppose you give a lottery ticket as a present to someone? It wins BIG. Is there an unwritten law as to how much, if any, percentage of the winnings you would, or should, receive? Has it happened to you or someone you know?

A gift is given in its entirety and the giver is entitled to nothing.

Once you attach conditions - 'if it's a winning ticket I want x amount' it is no longer a gift but a contract.

However, this is the stuff of nightmares. I suspect that anything less than 50% could fuel resentment on the part of the giver, and more than 50% could leave the recipient feeling hard done by.

Don't do it. The best scenario is to buy a ticket, and if it wins, give the intended recipient a sum you are happy with
No, why should it? A gift is a gift, don't expect anything back, that's why it's a gift, it's given.

Has it happened to you, is the human greed, me me me, kicking in?
At my daughters wedding last week she gave everyone a lottery ticket as a "favour" approx 60 were given out ... ive not heard of anyone winning anything as yet but if they have they might be keeping it to theirselves ? il be asking around i think ... : )

I agree with everyone else, it would show you up as a greedy cud if you wanted a share of the winnings

Oh, thanks for all that lot. No, honestly, I`m not greedy. I was actually thinking about it from MY point of view. If someone gave me a winning ticket I`m pretty sure I`d like to give them a share. Wouldn`t you all? Honestly?
No I wouldn't, I'd keep it all for myself, money after all is the key to happiness. But only when you give it away.

contradicting statement there, Flob, I would say. You`re gonna be happy to keep it and to give it away?
A gift is a gift.

My mum sometimes gives me a lottery ticket when she's up or in a birthday card but if I won I'd make sure she did very nicely out of it.

I went to bingo a few times with a friend and her mum. Her mum won about 600.00 which was great as she was thinking of a new kitchen :)

She gave me and friend 20 each which was very unexpected and I was very touched at.

After I heard her be slated in private as others thought she should have shared out the money with anyone she was with and was quite horrified. If there had been an agreement beforehand then fair enough but I doubt they'd have felt the same if they have won!
I wouldn't expect anything if the win was big.

A gift is a gift!!
I agree with funnygirl. If I gave someone a lottery ticket which won, I'd just be pleased for that person and wouldn't expect a penny out of it.
You don't give a gift to your friends in the hope of getting something back.

That`s all very laudable but I`m still waiting to see what any of you would do (except for Flob) if YOU were given the winning ticket!!
I'd keep it - but probably treat the person who gave it to me in the first place to a meal or something, just to say thank you!

My Grandmother gives all her immediate family a lottery ticket in our birthday cards. Last year, my Dad won 33k on the ticket she gifted.

She did not expect a penny from him (I did though LOL), but he bought her and my step-granda a new suite, which they had been talking about just days earlier.
