Hey encee,

Try a rubber ring for his bum, it might help. How are his heels hurting, can't really picture how he's sitting.

Sorry if I'm being dim!

I was also going to suggest a rubber ring encee. Is it possible for you and someone else to massage his backside? This will increase the circulation as you may know. How about a firm pillow under his lower back at night?
