I'm now a dark brown head and my hair is dead straight and thick and goes to my mid back, i have bangs, i'm wanting to get lots of layers to lighten it up so its not so heavy, will that do the trick, and also should i dye my hair black?

The thing about layers is that they tend to stick out at all angles and take a lot longer to style in the morning. By all means layers will make your hair look fuller and it will be lighter but probably not so as you would notice the difference. It's entirely up to you what colour you want to dye it, but black dye will make your complexion look very pale. Good luck!
Why dont you get the hairdresser to thin it out with thinning scissors? Also, if you want layers I think they will look really good especially if you have long hair. And about dying it black, as Doolallygirl said it depends on what your skin tone is, you may end up looking really pale. Although black hair looks great if you have an olive tone skin.
instead of layers through the hair just have the ends done and have the sides feathered around the face, this stops the hair looking heavy, as for the colour my partner recently dyed her hair black and despite being fair it looked nice, it is a risk, but hair grows eventually
ok. one i would defanatly put some long layers and get some pomade while your at it . stay away from black hair color ! choose the darkest shade of brown but not black because if you dont like it your stuck until you grow it out . black stains so it wont fade or wash out even if you use tempory hair color the stuff wont budge even with bleach.. also don't listen to the other girl with the thinning shears it will just make your hair un manageable when the shorter hairs grow out and will also give you split ends and frizz. good luck
Sounds just like my daughter's hair - she dyed it black and it looks fantastic. Sometimes she adds red or berry overtones/highlights. Layering does not work, tho, try geometric styles :).
I understand you situation. But I think maybe you should keep it you natural color. You don't want to be too dramatic and have the whole school talk about you. Im a high school student so I know how it works! It's really up to you though. I think the layers will look awesome, but I'm not sure about the black. If you really don't care what people say then go for it, it not dont.
Oh yeah, don't take this the wrong way, but I know how people are around here, and a lot of people might call you a poser then. I don't know you so I can't judge, but that's how ppl would react here. Its your hair so goodluck
and don't listen to "nicolewatts9" about the not going away, because I have black hair because I'm half mexican. I recently dyed it black b/c I had blonde highlights in it, and it washes away in the shower everytime I wash it. Everything else she said is exactly right!
