Help ! I'm going mad trying to pick a name for a baby that my hubby , parents , in-laws and I can all agree on. I'm due my baby mid December and although we don't know the sex of the baby , picking a girl's name was easy - the boy's name is causing chaos ! I like Callum but hubby says that there are too many and he'll be forever known as Callum G. For every other name I say , my mother finds some bizarre rhyming slang. I feel like throttling them all. Please help with some suggestions and why you think that that would be a good name for a baby. No wacky names that scream "please bully me" please. Many thanks x

Thomas John. Which included both of the names that run in our family, we liked it, could be shortened to TJ or Tom, and we were unanimous... until our littl'un had ideas of her own and turned out to be a girl!
You should have a look around this site. There's quite a lot of advice, opinions, popularity lists, pros and cons etc on there. http://www.namenerds.com/uucn/
I always loved Alexander (was my grandfathers name also) and would have shortened it to Xander. Also loved Joshua (Josh) and Zachary (Zak). Husband hated all of these (he came from a family of John and Stephens) so thank god we had girls!!!
Enigma...it's such a shame your family have taken all the fun out of chosing a name for your next little one. They should be ashamed of themselves. I loved picking names and talking about possibilities, and it seems that joy has been taken away for you. I'm tempted to agree with previous post and say just pick a name you like and let them all live with it....you are doing ALL the hard work after all (I know, been there!). And beware....we picked out Angus as our boys name (and all family were happy with that)....but when he arrived, I thought instantly that it didn't suit him. We called him Charlie, which I love. And so do all his relatives......so maybe just keep your name to yourself for now, and lobby hard once Jnr arrives! it's a stern and stone hearted family that can talk down a just-given-birth-mum!!!! Good luck with the birth, huge congrats on your patience with your family, and PLEASE let us all know what you chose. Oh, and I LOVE Callum as a choice of name!xx
OOH!!! Kit!!! THANK GOD you had a girl!!! Do you not know your DH Lawrence?? John Thomas??????
P.S. what about something similar to Callum , that's less common...maybe Coll???
Hi Folks, I am the aforementioned picky husband of Enigma. I don't think I am being too choosy its just that every name I come up with she has to disagree!!! These are the names I like: Aidan Ryan Ben Jack Liam Thomas Paul I don't think any of them are so bad are they? Your thoughts please to end this nightmare!!!!!!
i love oscar and finn - they're my boyfriends brothers names. his middle name is winter so his mom has kind of wacky taste in names! still cool though i think.
How about Scott, Andrew, Morgan, Joshua or Thomas? I was going to name my son Nicholas, but decided on Morgan James instead.
Hi there, Its difficult to choose names for children. I thinl callum is a nice name. I have 3 sons Kane,Nathan and Billy. I found iteasier to wait untill they were born, see what name would suit them then. I wanted to call my youngest Charlie but when he was born he just looked like a Billy.Hope this is of some help to you. Buckieohare 07/08/04

Naughty hubby sneaking in there lol ! I'm not saying that I don't like the names which he likes , just that i'm not as keen on them as other names for the following reasons : I went right off Aiden when I heard it being shortened to Aids , my hubby is part of a HUGE family and already have ample Paul's , Jack's , Ryan's and Thomas's. At family gatherings when someone calls out one of those names it gets very confusing - I don't want to add to the problem ! A lot of my friends have dogs called Ben so that's out and although I like Liam , it wouldn't be my number one choice. I'm amazed though that my hubby has listed various names in his reply , as all he ever says to me is either Ben or Jack. It IS quite sad Jills that what should be such a joyous occasion , choosing our unborn child's name has degenerated into WW3 ! My mother means well and gets on extremely well with my hubby Woofgang , the problem however is that she still sees me as her little girl and feels the need to take control and mother me - or should that be smother me !!! Thanks to you all for your wonderful suggestions and advice. I will go and check out the links mentioned and will definitely keep you all posted with regards to what we decide ...... you just may have to wait a while ! Thanks again peeps x

ps My favourites are : Callum , Craig , Lewis , Jason and Matthew. Oh and SteveD , I really liked your reply too. That's really on my wavelength. I try to look to the future and imagine my child not as a gurgling little bundle of joy , rather as a twenty something adult , paving their way though life and having to live with the name which their dad and I have chosen. I loved all your answers and am extremely grateful for your help. My head is swimming though - certainly a lot to chew over. Still , we have 19 weeks left .... argh !!!!!! I think that my hubby and I will have to draw up a list of potential names where we can meet on middle ground so that if our baby doesn't seem to suit the name which we have chosen - as happened with our second daughter - we are not back to square one , frantically trawling through the baby books again , with the midwifes nagging us to name the poor wee mite ! Many thanks again peeps and watch this space lol !!!
I like Robert, John and Nick. I have to say that clatty matty thing is bizarre, I've never heard that and it's a pretty popular name. I sympathise over the relatives' input - my sister in law just called her baby Jasmin and all that her stepmother keeps trotting out is a bizarre racist comment that nobody else can make head or tail of!!!
Question Author
I think that clatty may be more commonly used where I am , in Scotland - meaning dirty. I love the name Jasmine - it's so pretty. Shame on your sister-in-law's stepmother to be pitiful enough as to insult a tiny little baby - especially when making rascist remarks. Some people really should learn to bite their tongue. I really feel it for your poor sister-in-law because you spend such a long time pondering over what name you feel is special enough to dedicate to the most precious person in your life - your child - and then some selfish person opens their big mouth and shoots you down in flames. Sad. It may not have been her mother-in-law's cup of tea but it was obviously special enough for the couple in question.
Why not call him John? It's not as common a name for babies now as it used to be, and your husband can call him Jack if he likes!
WHAT ABOUT JAKE OR CODY BOTH COOL AND TRENDY ???
enigma, why do you have to pick a name that everyone likes? i don't understand. when we got married, we decided we were going to take turns choosing babies' names. the first i picked, Janette. the second he picked, Adriana. the third i picked, Gabriela. you know what? it worked wonders, everyone loves their names. i realize i don't answer your question, but stil wanted to give you my thoughts. i hope you do find a good name at the end.
im in exactly the same situation. I love the name Brendon. I hope everything goes well good luck x x

I just like a quiet life worder but it's hard trying to keep everyone happy and of course it's an impossible task anyway. I just hope that hubby and I can agree on a name. I'm glad it worked out for you when you were taking turns of name picking - unfortunately if I gave my hubby the green light to choose the name of our child alone , the poor wee mite would undoubtedly end up named after some foreign footballer or have a name I would cringe at and i'd have to put my foot down and say noooooooo ! Better to agree on at least some middle ground names early on. That's a nice name hellie but it wouldn't work for us because it's my hubby's ex boss's name and he couldn't stand him. Good luck to you too x

Tried the link which squiggles had given me and used the random name generator to see what "fate" would decide for a boy's name. Here's the best it came up with : Magnus "The dude" and Butthead Byron. Hmmmmm. Maybe it's not such a good idea to leave it to chance !!!!
