My hubby had an accident on push bike a month ago and sustained (amongst other things) a deep gouge down the front of his shin. He went to the doctor today after a lot of badgering by me as the wound was clearly infected and smelling. The doctor has prescribed him antibiotics but has not given any help as to how to dress or treat this wound. Any help/advice much appreciated.

Get to the doctor again asap and put your foot down! They should dress it for him. Or if you've got an awkward hubby who won't go to the docs, phone them and explain the situation and ask them what you should do. Otherwise, it could get seriously nasty.
nhs direct are really helpful when it come to things like this with loads of advice (usually starting GO TO THE DOCTOR) but as you've already seen one and just need general dressing advice they should be able to advise you over the phone 0845 46 47 and see http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/
Melolin dressings are good for most DIY first aid. Make sure the right side is placed in contact with the skin. If not too much gunge coming out, use dressing with micropore tape to keep it on. If there is a lot of gunge, use melolin and then a bandage with an absorbent pad. I AM NOT A DOCTOR! This is what I would do, based on years of patching up old people's skins!
1 month is a long time for that to clear up. If the problem persists I'd pop along to your local A&E Dept and get it checked out. He may have a wound sinus or something similar and may require debridement and a wound washout.
it would be best to see the practice nurse if there is one who should be able to change dressings for you, that is part of their job

Thanks for all your answers! Unfortunately my hubby is super awkward about these things and refuses any further treatment, I think he is hoping the antibiotics will just clear it up. I really can't bear arguing about it any more so I've left it to him...
