what i can take (other than paracetamol) for a cold / flu symptoms?

I know we cant take decongestants and i cant get to see a GP til new year so has anyone found a safe releif from the cold and flu bugs going around? I never had a cold last time i was pregnant so never really took note of what i could take.

Mr CRX had a bad cold last weekend and i thought id managed to avoid it but obviously it just took longer to appear in me. Got headache, sore throat, streaming nose, bunged up ears etc and just generally feel like pants (not even sexy pants, but great big grey apple catcher pants!!!! lol)

Helo,

I got a cold a while back too, the one thing that gave me relief for a bit was putting my head over a bowl of hot steaming water! It cleared my nose quite good for a while!!
I also drank warm lemonade as it kinda scratched my sore throat better, scratched maybe the wrong word, but it didn't tickle after.
You can take cold medicines that are meant for babies, why dont you go down to you're local pharmacy and ask them?!
I know you're not supposed to eat honey because of an ingredient (can't remember what though) the same thing is in lockets too!!

Isn't there so many things to remember when you're preggie, what not to eat and what to eat. Can be sooooo confusing at times!!
I nearly drank some beer last night till I remembered
"it's on the 'no' list" Doh!!

What I'd do for a nice beer though!!!

Hope you feel better soon, it's a good excuse to curl up in bed though with this weather!!! :>)

oooh if only i could curl up in bed. Last day at work today and then i have to get everything ready for xmas hols and going away :(

Honey can contain botulism so i know i cant take honey and lemon, will try the hot water bowl and just watch i dont spill it on the PC lol

Id say have a sip of beer if you fancy it, I am one who thinks some things in moderation are ok but dont overdo it. I shall have a glass of wine at xmas dinner :)

will send Mr CRX to pharmacy later and see what he can get me.

thanks xx
Sorry to hear you are feeling poorly redcrx, not much fun at the best of times.

How about a couple of paracetemol and some hot orange (dilute) dont know why but the hot orange always relieves my throat.

Or you could have a hot toddy, not right now obviously - bit early, I sure one wont harm you, chuck in some cloves, sugar and lemon or even a hot port.

Cwpsi suggestion of baby medicines seem definitely worth looking into.

Hope you feel better soon.
Hope you feel better soon, red xx

I can't remember what I took..I recall making my own 'lemsip' with lemon juice and paracetamol which only relieved symptoms for a while. Having a sore throat is the worst..you don't seem to be allowed to use anything for that!
errrr...... I didn't mean chuck the hot port in with the hot toddy!!! Although perhaps after that concoction you wont care too much about your cold.
Question Author
thanks warpig, Ive had hot blackcurrant (ribena) for the vit c and to ease my throat a bit.

A hot toddy sounds nice but as a household that doesnt usually drink I have a dusty bottle of vodka and a bottle of baileys in house. Baileys may help me sleep tonight though :)

I really do not like to drink whilst being preggie, I've ,ade so many comments about others drinking I don't like to be a hypocrite either!! It wont do me any harm anyways, but in Homer Simpsons 'doughnut' language style

"lageeeeer"

I forgot to comment about you'r pants crx, but great big grey apple catcher pants are the only thing I can just about fit into nowdays!! I thought they were quite sexy, or has the man of the house been lying to me, again!!!

lol, you can always pack some into your maternity bag ready to wet the babys head once born (if youre not BFing)

Apple catchers are all im wearing too, but my fella certainly doesnt class them as sexy. men always fib, we should know that by now lol
Awww redcrx honey , sorry you are feeling like Bridget Jones pants , I am not surprised though that you have caught mrcrx bug , that same sounding bug I am getting over is one I caught from my son who brought it home with him . It seems to be touring the country ! Bless you , you could well do without it . Let's hope it is gone in a couple of days and that you start to improve soon . (hug) xxx

thanks bigmamma, Ive got too much to do to be able to wallow in self pity (and i do like to do that given the chance lol)
just got to hope that little CRX doesnt get it this close to xmas.
Oh I hope not too redcrx as little ones are a worry to you when they are sick . I am glad I got better before xmas as the xmas before last I ended up in hospital christmas day afternoon !
Question Author
oh not a great way to spend xmas hun!

Glad that youre recovering from your bug, i hope your son brings you something better hom this weekend :)
Oh dear not you as well!

I spent the last term of school avoiding the nasty tummy bug that had both staff and children off school as well as the usual cold and flu bugs. Wednesday was the last day of school. That night my daughter started with the tummy bug and today I woke up with the hold of my head bunged up and feeling like I havent had any sleep for a week! I actually had a doctors appointment this morning for something else but had cancel it as my brother, understandably, didnt want to look after my daughter and risk getting the tummy bug. I was supposed to be going into town today to finish off xmas shopping and going tonight to get all the food and goodies in for the xmas period. Still will have to or else it wont get done! Any offers from anyone to come and do it for me or can I just cancel xmas? lol
Ok while we are feeling sorry for ourselves can I just add my right foot has swollen up and wont go down?
Question Author
get your foot up. Make sure your clothes arent restricting blood flow!

If it hasnt gone down after that then please call your midwife and see if she can do a home visit!

I hope you start to feel better soon as well, because Im not sure cancelling xmas is allowed :)
With me and my hormones, if I want to cancel it I will! lol

I will try and keep my feet up but with so much to do and a little one to look after, you know what that can be like by itself!, its not easy right now!

I had a regular midwife check on Tuesday and she has out me off midwives! She was so negative about everything and wrote about things in my notes that we hadnt really talked about! Im 30 weeks and because baby was in a breech position, she started going on about the possibility of having an elected c-section! I said I wanted a home birth and she talked down to me about my iron levels arent high enough and that until they are they wont even start to go down that road. She wasnt impressed when I told her I already had all the forms to book my home birth. Im on iron tablets and due another blood test to check my levels in about 6 weeks so there was no need for her to be so negative about that either! My levels have to be 11 or above and a few weeks ago were 10.3 so not much further to go anyway. She asked about my PGP and I said the support bandage only makes it worse and that despite following all the instructions, its getting really painful at times........her comment in my notes?.........not much inprovement. There isnt ANY improvement and its worse! She also wrote in the chart bit "slight" where they comment on any swelling. She never even asked me!! My next appointment is 15th January, if its her again, Im walking out!

Ok whinge over lol (for now)
Question Author
oh that sounds awful, i have pretty good midwives here so am lucky.

at 30 weeks you can do as much as possible to get baby to turn and its still a bit early Id have thought

you could always call hospital if swelling is worrying, and cant little psychick settle down for a few hours to allow you to rest your foot?

Question Author
mr CRX has just been to chemists and told them my symptoms and that being asthmatic and 5 months pregnant i cant take ibruprofen anyway.

The pharmacist told him to take me to GP (thats 60 miles away) and then tried to sell him paracetamol.

So no help there then :(
All good advice here red, but just wanted to extend my sympathies as I had colds all the way through my pregnancy last year and I don't just get normal colds I get the full works - sinusitis etc so I know full well how horrible it is to be pregnant and unable to take anything worth taking!
Hope you feel better in time for Christmas :)
Question Author
oooh you poor thing Hellie, sounds very very painful.

Ive had second lot of paracetamol of the day and still nothings shifted the groggy feeling. Going to find another pharmacist later. the i will do as much shopping as i can (Mr CRX will be there) and then go to bed!
