Is the improvement in NHS hearing aids well known?

The NHS service in providing digital hearing aids has improved enormously this year. Having had a single analogue one a few years ago I wanted to change to digital ones. In May 2006 I was told the waiting list was three years, so early this year I decided I could not wait that long and bought two private in the ear (ITE) ones.
Imagine my surprise in receiving an invitation a few weeks ago to arrange an appointment for a consultation
to fit digital ones. I had two behind the ear (BTE) fitted last Friday, and I am delighted with their performance. I
am in a good position to compare the two: technically there is no difference, the ITE is slightly easier to fit, the BTE requires more care in putting on spectacles, but is easier to keep clear of wax. Both are recent designs.
The main difference is in the cost, of course - over �1700.
