Is leg length discrepancy common after a total hip replacement? If so is there any way it can be corrected without wearing a built up shoe? Also is it due to the incompetence of the surgeon?

the length of the leg usually does change after hip surgery, it has nothing to do with the surgeon it can happen to anyone, some change, some don't, ask your consultant to refer you to the surgical appliance dept, they will sort out your shoe .
It is not uncommon for the operated side to have a longer leg after hip replacement, slightly rarer for it to be shorter.

It is not due to incompetence and occurs in about 12% of all these operations.

A shoe insert with the shorter leg is the usual method of correction. If the difference in length is more marked, then a built up shoe is needed.

Further surgery to correct it is not usually an option.
