It depends on what you mean. For example,if it's a thyroid problem,medication will be perscribed,together with surgery where applicable. If you're talking about cosmetic surgery such as liposuction,i'd imagine only if everything else had failed and a person's life was in immediate danger due to their weight. But then again,if a person was deemed to be in extreme psychological distress it might be considered also.
I am waiting for gastric bypass surgery for 18 months.  The Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast will not allow the surgeons there to carry out this surgery at present.  I am very upset by this as I saw my surgeon 18 months ago and it looked quite promising.  I am still waiting and still gaining weight.  It is very frustrating.  I cannot afford the option of going private.  I am just a normal 9-5 working mum not a millionaire.

Does anyone know of any support/pressure groups in Northern Ireland for bariatric surgery?
