Watching cbs news and they have just said that myspace have discovered 29,000 registered sex offenders on mytspace using their real names.

they suspect figures could be double as some are using alias names.

that is very very worrying and disturbing.

Having read some blogs of another similar site aimed at teenagers -I am astounded at ;
a) - The things they have written about what they have done and what they are going to be doing-as young as 13/14 yr old
b) -Just how easy it is to register -its a paedos paradise -and had I children of that age or older -I would be seriously concerned.

It does not IMO appear to be monitored at all.
Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

Even my 18yr old daughter is horrified at the filth on some of the blogs.I daresay a lot is bravado and an attempt to impress their peers but to a paedo its manna from heaven.

gettin back to the point tho.

myspace is one of the biggest and its a fact 29,000 registered sex offenders are on there.

keep your kids off of it is my advice.

but how many people use it?

If you went by that reckoning you would never let your kids do anything. x number of people use swimming baths..... so many of them are sex offenders etc etc..... x number of people shop in ASDA, how many of them are sex offenders?

You cant wrap your children up in cotton wool. You can guide them and hope they make the right choices and ensure they feel comfortable enough with you to discuss openly any fears they have.

I truly believe cotton wool parenting, over protecting, and always say no to anything bad for you attitude is asking for trouble.

My daughter registered on myspace yesterday.Surely, kids are safe as long as they dont arrange meetings?
Ask her to keep her profile private Hau. I do!
Question Author
its 29,000 registered sex offenders in the usa alone that they know of goody.
i hear what youre saying but there are bound to be many more.

im sorry youre a bit too noncholant about it in my opinion.

i was at my m8s shop a welsh girl was on the internet ,holidaymaker, her dad sat next to her as she was on msn and bebo just to see what she was up to.

shes about 15.i cant say i blame him.

you say cotton wool but is the opposite not what you see on every street corner in britain 25 year olds doin what they want ,no parental control , and just gettin into bother.

its a parents duty to protect their child.

end of
OK Goody, will do.She is very sensible,i trust her.
Question Author
trust is ok.

but id supervise her
Yeah it is but with that attitude your teenage girl will sign up secretly. You will never know what she is up to, and she will never feel comfortable to say, I like this boy on myspace, he goes to a different school in my town can I go and meet him?

There are sex offenders everywhere, the internet has made abuse easier but worst case scenario stories haven't actually increased any since the 1940s.

I genuinely dont think young kids are any more trouble than they were 20 years ago. Teenagers are in a rush to grow up but you cant always keep them in!

well a responsible adult will have an administrators account on the pc.

im sorry goody your comments are bizarre !!!
I understand what youre saying Goodsoulette but she asked me if she could register and i watched her do it.She really is sensible, ive told her the dangers and also they do have talks about it at school.I am a worrier about this kind of thing,im very protective of her as we`ve lost 4 kids in the family to road accidents and other things. My worry is that im too protective.
Question Author
in this case i dont think you can be too protective, its a dangerous place online for young girls

no watch its dangerous on there
Were you a teenage girl Legend?

Have you any idea how they think?

Have you any idea how they act and how they want their parents to believe they act?

Banning something outright makes it a lot more attractive and teenage girls are on the whole very good at being sneaky. So she cant use myspace at your house, Im betting she can at one of her friends! etc etc

You make it clear that you seem to think you are the perfect parent legend.

Hau, it sounds to me like you have a good relationship with her and I think your trust in her is admirable. I am very glad I have 2 boys lol
Goody,Legend is refering to my one word answer to try to get on all four or the most recent posts.
I was actually explaining my bizarre comments. That wasnt there when i started and got distracted by the mexicolas.
Thanks for that GS,we do have a good relationship. She knows what ive been through with the family and wont want to make me worry.
