I think it may be a calcium defficiency
Hey, read this following link - I thought the same as Roxy but apparently not...

It means you are not getting enough calcium.
I'm sure that I've read that spots on all the nails was the result of a Zinc deficiency.
The white marks are amost certainly nothing to worry about. Everyone gets them. It's just when you've hit your finger or something, and that bit of nail dies. Just like the very tips of the nails are white because it is dead.

Thanx for that
In fact you should see my fingernails.. I play the piano and every glissando across the keys leaves a white mark!!
Contrary to popular belief it is not a sign of calcium deficiency: it either means a zinc deficiency, or it can be as a result of having bashed your nail. You can get more zinc by eating 3 brazil nuts a day so it shouldn't be hard to get back on track if that is the case.
It depends on the types of marks on your nails....if it's small blotches that appear rarely then it most likely nothing to worry about. If it's on a lot of your nails and happening often then it could be a zinc deficiency.....If the marks run the length of your nails as they grow it can be a sign of lead poisoning.
The same as other answers - not due to deficiencies but due to damage to the nail bed.
