Going on a long haul flight soon and wonder if anyone can recommend anything that's strong and actually works? I have tried valluim before but it seems to have the opposite effect on me. Thanks in advance

A car,... failing that a bottle of vodka helps me x
Most of the planes actually make it - so don't worry too much!

But seriously, laugh it off (?)
Question Author
Thanks, but really, I will be a quivering wreck if I don't take anything. Hang on a minute, what do you mean most of the planes make it? I don't want to be in that small percentage that don't.
a line that always makes me laugh is: When its your time to 'go' its your time to 'go' ..............but what if its the pilots time to 'go' ??? : O (only kidding) there was a talk show on the radion the other day and this expert said that if you see your doctor he will prescribe one valium for each flight so theres no chance you get hooked on them, but it really does help? just a thought good luck xx

Thansk curlyperm but I think I'm immune to them or something as they make me even more anxious. The best thing I could take would be the sedative that the dentist gave me for a route canal, I was in happy land that day I can tell you. Can't see that I could actually get that though! Anything else?
Now I know you won't believe me but .....

About half an hour before take off, get a friend to rub a copper coin up and down the nape of your neck whilst you hold your head down with your chin on your chest. Keep this up for just ten minutes, slowly, and gently so as not to irritate the skin. I assure you that your flight will be panic free.

There! I knew you'd be sceptical. But ... wait .... it actually works!

Ok theland, am sceptical but desperate so will give it a try. Thanks
You're welcome. Honestly, it works!
Try Kalms tablets. They are not strong, and may be psychological (who cares, as long as they have an effect)
I used to suffer from the fear of flying (BIG TIME) until last year. To keep it short I missed out on a WOW holiday with my wife and knew that I needed to sort it out. Previously I took varies GP prescribed drugs and in the beginning they were OK but fear has a habit of escalating till it directed me not to fly full stop!
Last September I did the Virgin, Flying without Fear course,
230 for the day including 45 min flight.
Since the course I have flown six times and can say its somewhat exciting. Fear doesnt like facts. I cant believe I am writing this because I think airplanes are just amazing!! Hope it works out for you.
When I was learning to drive, I used to really panic. So much so, I failed my driving test 5 times. I went to my doc's and explained how I was feeling and he prescribed me propranolol 10mg. I passed the next time! May work for flying too.... xx

Thanks for those tips everyone, andover888 Im really pleased for you, I heard all about the virgin course. It expensive but worth it. And emz, I will ask doc for those propanlol thingys. Thanks
The time while you are on the plane before take-off, and the actual take-off itself are usually the most frightening. But, once you have been in the air for 10 minutes (provided you don't fly into storm clouds, when there will be turbulence!), you will soon relax, have a drink, watch a movie....have a meal (airline food varies)..you will be fine! Millions of people fly every day, with no problem.
