I don't know how to stop them but I do know that you should never clip the sides.
Hello ruby, have you tried cutting a little V in the top of the nail this might help as the nail then grows upwards towards the gap not into the toe, hope this makes sense, try it,it worked for me, good luck.xx

I might have to ask the doctor....... not THE DR.. not DR Who... although... I'm sure he'd make me feel tons better! Lol
Hello ruby, when you look at the nail from above, cut a V into it at the top of the nail, then as the nail grows it grows normally as it closes the gap you have cut,, bloody hell it is hard to describe, think we need johnlambert, lol he could do it for you. xx

No thanks... I don't need that t!t anywhere near me! I'd rather suffer the pain!

So I cut a V into it? But that would make my toe look manky! Lol
when you cut it back, stuff a little piece of lint under it as far as it goes, and leave it there. change it occasionally, but this will ''train'' the nail to grow outwards instead of in.

if they get really bad, a chirpodist can remove a sliver of the root of the bit that grow over.
There's nothing you can do with them really. One option is to have them surgically removed. However, this exposes the nail bed and increases the chance of infection long-term.
