Is it becomming a national sport? Or even an international one!

I'm a non smoker myself but I can't help feeling a little sympathy for the relentless bashing that is occurring. Are they now one of the few groups it's still ok to persecute?

tax on petrol

tax on beer.

tax on smokers.

how much does the working man have to contribute to the upkeep of this country ???

its ok to consume booze.
its ok to drive
but, to smoke is becoming a sin.

britain at its finest !!!!!
I suppose it is a national preoccupation, but the smelly sods deserve a bashing, give up you weaklings!
Im an ex smoker and i must say, im glad of that!To not be able to have a ciggie when i go to the pub would make me stay at home.
I personally think they get treated like outcasts of society. there are way worse things they could be doing than puffing away on a fag! I say give em a break!
I think that you might have a good point there, Mrs T. In this age of psychotic political correctness in which we have to be extremely careful as to the way we refer to certain groups of people, we have discovered a group that we can disparage, treat with disdain, and hold in contempt with absolutely no fear of being labeled bigots, racists, or rednecks! We are allowed to call them a minority; we can say they have brown-stained fingers; we are able to refer to their foul-smelling breath; we can mention that their clothing reeks of something; we can complain about how they are a burden upon the Health System; we can note that they tend to stick together in their own little groups; and, most importantly, we can shout "Get outta here you miserable bunch: go somewhere else!"....Thankyou, smokers.

Would you be so quick to forgive them when you have to keep cleaning up stinky ashtrays and piles of fag ends on the pavement, not to mention the wonderful smell on your clothes when you spend time with a smoking smoker!

they have a lot of help to quit, there is no excuse!, I gave up 10 years ago, best thing I ever did!

but no one minds driving cars that pollute the atmosphere do they? I don't agree with smoking in restaurants and other public places but i do think you should be able to have a fag with your drink in a pub. My local is a proper backstreet pub and i would say that the majority of customers are smokers. it will kill the place. it might be ok for the big pubs and clubs to provide suitable areas but places like this will be finished, i honestly believe that!

Yes Paul I do agree with the ban, I can't wait for 1/7. I'm just starting to see the next phase though. Things like employers banning smoke breaks etc, I guess I'm just feeling a little sympathy for the underdog. Don't get me wrong I hate the foul habit myself, I just had a minor attack of compassion!
hi julie, I can understand that about the pub, I am against smokers but I can see the problems that some publicans are going to have. there are some near me and they are panicking about it!
the ban hasnt cost any jobs in scotland and weatherspoons profits there are up 7%.What smokers have to remember is that they are in the minority. And as its majority rule they have to do as told by the majority.End of debate.lol.
yeah but legend, hiya btw, im on about the small pubs like my loval where the majority of the customers are smokes. We did a head count one night in there and out of about 30 people, 20 plus were smokers. Any smoker will tell you, the best time to have a fag, is with a beer. i just think thats a step too far.
Put cigarettes up to 25 per packet. That'll teach them.

A horrible cancer-inducing habit that costs the country millions in NHS, lost work hours and litter patrol.

Smokers, as said, definately deserve a bashing. They have no respect for anything. How can they, when they are puffing ar5enic into their lungs.
nah its been in in scotland for a year and a half i know many smokers who just nip out to the beer garden which has heating too and have a quick fag , in scotland.they say they smoke less on a night out and its actually led to 45000 people stopping smokin in scotland last year alone.
Oh forgot to say hi julz..There i am on my rant lol.
legend, you know nothing of a "democracy" ??????

no doubt you were raised in communist China or Russia..

i pay my taxes. i AM entitled to do as i please !

i say ban driving and flying. ban drinking in public. ban holidays and ban keeping pets. ban hospital treatment for over 60`
ban football, ban friends, ban music.

WHO ARE "THE MAJORITY" ??????????????????

a couple hundred MP`s ?????

IF SMOKING IS SO BAD, WHY NOT BAN IT 100%
but what about all the tax they pay then ? does that not go into any extra healthcare they might need and if you drink, as in alcohol, then you might just end up ill because of it, whether its excessive drinking or not, not all smokers are a drain on the NHS you know. They dont ALL get lung cancer either! Some even die early so they save the NHS millions cause they dont get old and drain the system!

Legend, you said the one word i know the little pubs wont do, heating! not a chance!
funky if thats what fags do to you you need to cut down drastically.
Julz the drain on healthcare is immmense they say 87,000 people in the uk die from smoking thats not counting the ciggie junkies who continue smoking even after amputations and throat operations. It is an addictive drug and as such should be resztrivted.Funky is right .Ban them now.Ooooops i think funky is gonna light up two and go ballistic now.balance the losss of taxes with the helth savings you still come up trumps.
there are other things that could do with being banned though Legend and yet they carry on, alcohol has far far more to answer to than smoking ! Many more deaths and violent behaviour, crime etc etc......but its always the smoker who gets the brunt of peoples anger for their habit!
Dont get me wrong, i hate it but i do think it is a choice people have a right to make.
obesity costs the health service more than smoking related illness. am i advocating smoking........ no
