Hi ya all just a little bit of advise needed here, I have suffered from gout from the very early age of 19, I take allopurenol which I belive is the most commen drug for it.
allopurenol usually keeps me from having attacks of it and until recently I cant remember the last time I had an attack, over the last 5-6 weeks I have had repeated attacks I had a fairly bad on around 6 weeks ago that went after around a week which is about the norm for me but when it cleared you could still feel that there is something there, the week b4 last I had one that was so bad I could barely walk and had to take time of work which I have never had to do before that has cleared up to a certain extent but I can feel it is still there and it feels like it will come back at any time.
Right you must all be bored rigid by now so will get to my quiest, I know that it can be a lot to do with diet and alcohole does not help either and have never bothered doing this b4 but searched on the web for remedies and old wives tales etc. I keep coming across many sites that recomend strawberries or juice but the one that people seam to swear by is cherries or cherry juice, have any of you a bayers out there had any succes with this and also if you have had any succes with any other remedie would be most gratefull if you could let us know as I cant afford to take any more time of work and dont relish the thought of the bed sheet resting on me big toe excrutiating painfull again.
In the meantime have been out this morning and bought meself a smoothie maker and a can of strawbeeries and a can of cherries so fingies crossed.
Cheers to you all.........

Alopurinol eventually affects the kidneys, try to get off it. Keep a record of what you have eaten or drunk and you may be able to find out what causes it. In the meantime, black pitted cherries should help a lot. If I can remember the site I will get back to you. Drink lots of water.
maybe you need a higher dose of allopurinol for a while. Kidney problems aren't usual.

sorry, can't advise on cherries.

Thanks for your answer br used to take zylurick (forgot how to spell that though)but you probbably know what I mean it coninsides with what is happening to me at the moment as maybe me kidneys are shutting down ands do drink around 2-3 litres of h2o a day.
The only other thing that I can think of is over the past 3-4 months at work I have been eating fried stuff for breakie as me work takes me there (and im sticking to that excusse) and have heard that fried stuff is not good for us gouties especially bacon and must admit have had a load of bacon sarnies just lately.
Am trying to improve my diet now and taking cheese sarnies to work and trying to not each much red meat for dinner and know that the kidneys get rid of the uric acid that crhstalieses (how you spell that) in your big toe (know that it can affect almost any joint but 75% of cases its your big toe ) jesses have found some horrific pics on the web of fingers with it .
In the meantime br many thanks for your advise will have a word with me docter about that but dont think he will be of much use as he is the type of person that if you ask aquistion he justs says computer says no and he is about 75 years old so will have to bin him

thanks for that jno some good advise on there but have tried taking a higher dosage and dont work can see where your logig comes from as that is exacttly what I thought and tried doing that but did not work but me quack docter and me phamasist ( god how do you spell chemist) both said that it does not work that way
it's no good taking extra to cure an attack when you have one, it doesn't work that way; but if you're experiencing more attacks in general, then raising the dosage you regularly take should help. It's helped me (so far... fingers crossed)

If I can remember my biochemistry properly, Gout is usually hereditary, passed on through faulty genes. Often assosiated in the past with rich, fat men that drank a lot of port the original thought was that this gave you gout. It doesn't ~ it only aggravates the existing condition. Diet is extremely important at keeping the symptoms at bay. Tomatoes, asparagus, peas, alcohol, citrus fruits and a high protien diet should all be avoided. The cause of gout is the excess amount of uric acid in your system. The kidneys are unable to deal with it and it then crystalises in (usually) the joint of the big toe, although it can also affect but more rarely other toe joints, the ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows and wrists. Foods high in purines should be avoided and a list of these can be provided by your health centre, practice or clinic. You can also ask you pharmacist to supply a diet sheet produced by the health authority. Try switching to balsamic vinegar dressings on your salads and start using olive oil. There is also a herbal supplement (I'm sure it's called glucosamine) that helps with joint problems such as gout and arthritus

Hi there and thanks for all your answeres, samual123 you are right about that it can be heredarty I have heard that as well and my dad did suffer from it as well.
Just looks like I have been lucky to get away with so little attacks over the past 20 years but looks like I will finaly have to do something about my diet and drink comsumption.........
P S its more or less cleared up now until the next time.
hello knobby
i have been taking allopurinal for years
no prob
i take every thing in moderation
Hi Nobby, I understand that Uric Acid in the blood causes crystals to be formed in many of the joints and these crystals eventually wear away the cartilage leaving the the bones in the joint to rub together, hence the painful arthritis and gout
I had a touch of arthritis in the 1980's and started taking Apple Cider Vinegar. I soon changed from the liquid to the tablet form and am still arthritis free, thank goodness.

Have a look at the following, it may be of some help to you.
I do hope so, and wish you well.

P.S. ACV can dissolve egg shells so it is presumably assumed that it can also dissolve uric acid crystals.
